Our server is currently undergoing a massive spam attack.

If you have received mails that claim to come from the address “topworldmusic” AT “worldmusic” DOT “de” (one of my other domains) please note: These mails do not originate from my server.
Our IP address is 213.133.103.172.

During the last two days I have counted over 20.000 backscatter mails that claim to come from the above address.

The subject changes. The content always advertises some weight loss drug. The spoofed sender address is constructed from the following pattern:

< top [name of domain] dk @ domain . tld >If you happen to receive such a mail it is more than likely spam.

Thought, I’d better let you know.

Sorry for being rather quiet. My server cought the measles a few day ago. Provider put it into quarantine for spreading to many germs.

Introduction

The po4a (po for anything) project goal is to ease translations (and more interestingly, the maintenance of translations) using gettext tools on areas where they were not expected like documentation.

It looks like this is exactly the tool I have been looking for:

• It speaks .pod
• It converts .pod to .po(t)
• It keeps track of changes in the original
• It is written in Perl )

I gave it a little testrun yesterday, converting perlglossary.pod to perlglossary.pot and then to perlglossary_de.pot. This file could easily be edited with the excellent LocFactory Editor on my Mac.

There are more tools like this out there, ranging from a dedicated Emacs .po mode to standalone applications like LocFactory. I will open a new category soon that lists the tools available.
Now it’s a matter of tying this together with the CVS repository on sourceforge and we’re almost ready to start.

I’m happy to announce that perldoc 2.0 has been accepted by sourceforge.net as a development project. During the next few days I will take the time to set up a proper web site for the project.

Yesterday evening I attended the Hamburg.pm meeting. We had a discussion about my project. Frank Seitz, one of the regulars in de.comp.lang.perl.misc had some interesting ideas about keeping the repository up to date and making sure the changes in the original files are communicated to the translators.

He suggested feeding the “source” documents into a database and splitting them up into individual paragraphs or chunks. Each chunk would have its own ID. On regular intervals these could automatically be compared to the original. If there was a discrepancy between the source and the database version, translators could be informed of this and move to action.

This system could also be used to ensure up-to-dateness of the translations. Chunks could be marked as “updated” in the database.

I also had the idea of “godfathering” the docs. This would be similar like the role of a maintainer of a module. A translator could “adopt” certain parts of the documentation for which she would be responsible.

Anyway, a decision needs to be made if we use a database or a system like SVN as the local backend.

Today I took the time to do a first test install of Catalyst, a Web Application Framework written in Perl, based on the MVC (model, view, controller) principle.
After 1 1/2 hours the beast was alive! Next is Subversion.

I just received new information from Ask Bjørn Hansen who manages the perl.org website. He has provided me with some site statistics.

I put these into the “Most requested documents” subcategory of the “Statistics” section.

Bottom line: Not only the “core” documents are important. CGI.pm is still a favourite (or is it just hard to use?). Draw your own conclusions if you wish.
