Blog update

Joergen W. Lang | 20. November 2006

I have done a few updates on the static parts of the blog. There now is a jobs section, I have also updated the statistics and extended the project status to contain more detailled information about what we’re at.

O’Reilly Media is now officially endorsing the perldoc 2.0 project. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the O’Reillys out there for their kind support and help.

Special thanks to Ariane Hesse of O’Reilly Germany for taking the time to listen to my ideas and suggestions and to coming back with more than I expected.

Top 100

Joergen W. Lang | 10. November 2006

Top 100 (almost)Yes, if you do your math right (using just a little bit of Heisenberg’s blur), perldoc 2.0 is already in the Top 100.

At least percent-wise that is. If you search for ” perldoc 2.0″ on sourceforge.net you can see, that we are at rank 1,625 (Nov 9, 2006, about 11:30pm CET). Out of all projects in SF (about 134,000) this means we have almost reached the top 1%.

Although I expect this to go down again, as soon as most of the basic files are in place, it feels good to see. (Err — yes, and we have 5 members in the team already.)

I will be away doing some shows with my Band over the weekend, but I hope I find the time to give you a full update on the project status and things that are going on behind the scenes by the beginning of next week.

More statistics

Joergen W. Lang | 4. November 2006

Nicolas François has just provided some new figures regarding differences and — much more important — commonness of the documentation for the major three Perl versions this project focusses upon.

Bottom line:

  • About half of the contents of all three documentation versions are the same.
  • Major differences between 5.6.2 and 5.8.8
  • Minor differences between 5.8.8 and 5.9.4
  • the documentation gets bigger (who would have thought that? )

This should give us some clues about the amount of work needed to bring heritage versions up to date.

Find the details in the Statistics section.

Mail from Damian Conway

Joergen W. Lang | 1. November 2006

After a busy weekend playing concerts with my Band, DÁN, I was happy to be back in Hamburg. When I checked my mail this morning there was a message from Damian Conway whom I met during this year’s Euro Foo/OSCON in Brussels.

Here is what he wrote:

I’m extremely glad that you’re going ahead with this translation project, Joergen. Having multilingual documentation *and* an infrastructure that encourages other translators to contribute as well is, in my view, essential to the further growth of Perl’s popularity, and I commend you for taking the lead in this important task.

Especially since you’re working on the German translation and Perl is already so hugely popular there in Germany, despite the lack of “native” documentation. It seems very right that this project should be targeting what is possibly the single largest non-English Perl community in the world.

Damian Conway

Hey, Damian, thanks for that, mate! ;)
