perldoc 2.0

This page describes the principles of the perldoc 2.0 project.

Versions:

To ease the integration of existing translations and achieve at least some level of consistency, this project focuses on the three “major” versions of Perl. These are:

• 5.8.8
  This is the version of Perl currently marked as “stable”.
  Most current translations focus on this.
• 5.9.4
  5.9.4 is the versions of Perl that is the current “developement” version.
  If you start a new translation project and want to have cutting edge documentation this might be for you. Please be warned that documents in this version might still be subject to a lot of changes so you might have to do some work more than once.
  See the statistics section for details on differences and similarities between the three versions.
• 5.6.2
  This version is mostly provided to maintain backwards compatibility for heritage versions of the Perl documentation.
  That’s why we mention it last.

These versions correspond with those mentioned on the perl.com website. This means, when 5.8.10 comes out, the supported version on this website will also change from 5.8.8 to 5.8.10.

Format:

This project advocates the gettext-format. At first sight this might seem a bit odd as gettext is mainly used for the translation of “strings” for menus, error messages and other output of programs.

But by utilizing the excellent po4a-tool we gain some advantages:

• easy integration of existing translations
• easy update of existing translations once the documentation has been updated
• easy management of different versions of translations

We will leverage these features to create a mechanism that hopefully helps translators to focus on the important issue (the translation) without having to learn too many new things. Just check out the file you want to work on from the SVN repository, grab one of the editors mentioned in our tools section and off you go!

Once you finished your translation you just commit back in to the repository and you have done mankind (and the perl community in particular) a great favour!
